Of all the things that go towards shaping our destiny, it is our belief in our own abilities which has the greatest influence. The reason for this academic failure was a combination of dyslexia and general lack of interest in school work.Sadly, the lack of academic achievement was accompanied by a complete lack of prowess on the sports field. To top it all off, as well as being a dunce and a sporting failure, the poor kid was not even good looking. He did not have rich parents to give him financial support . His parents were not business owners, so there was no chance of a career via nepotism. He had no obvious skills or talent, so a career as an artist or musician was not an option.This sounded like the stereotypical beginning for a person who will at best survive by taking low-paid employment and, at worst, will drift into a life of crime as a way of snatching what he is incapable of earning. His school headmaster is credited with saying on his premature departure from the education system, �I feel sure you will either end up in prison or become a millionaire'. To entertain the idea that this person had any prospect of becoming a millionaire, you would have to know his character. We can only see the external disadvantages, the headmaster was aware of the strength of character and depth of self belief existing within this person. That self-belief more than made up for any lack of education and academic qualifications.One thing the prospective jailbird/millionaire had was the ability to spot a niche for a new business. No, this is not a story of luck bringing an instant rags to riches transformation. Unfortunately his first two business ventures failed miserably. Did this set him on a path of serial business failures? Not at all, the failures probably taught him valuable lessons. He started the first business at the age of seven, so the chances of real success were pretty remote! The fact that he had sufficient self-belief to start his first business before he even reached his teenage years gives us a clue as to his character.The condensed version of the rest of this biography is that the "hero" of the story built a successful business before he reached his twenties, was a millionaire by the age of 25 and was the owner of a Caribbean island before he was thirty. He did not stop working then, he went on from flamboyant success to even bigger flamboyant success, setting records and achieving the apparently impossible.The subject of the TV program was Sir Richard Branson who is, at the time of writing, a billionaire several times over. He has attributed his success to hard work, belief in his business ventures and a willingness to take risks. These risks have included the well publicised (and life threatening) hot-air balloon journeys, starting a business on borrowed capital and taking risks in business where the potential losses were huge.It is self-belief which made it possible to take those risks. Ilustrasi diatas merupakan kisah nyata salah satu pengidap psikopati. Menurut pengamatan psikolog dari Universitas Indonesia, Sartono Mukadis, “Saya menilainya sebagai orang awam yang mengerti psikologi,” ujarnya. Menurut Sartono, perilaku MG cocok dengan 20 kriteria psikopat yang disusun ahli psikopati dunia, Robert D. Hare. (1)

Istilah psiko (psycho) atau psiki (psyche) berasal dari Yunani yang berarti jiwa. Psikopatologi yaitu ilmu yang mempelajari tentang kelainan atau gangguan emosi dan perilaku. Dalam psikiatri, psikopat atau sosiopat ataugangguan karakter cukup sulit menerima terapi. Sebelum jauh membahas Psikopat, ada baiknya kita tinjau sejenak, apa itu psikopat? Apa penyebabnya(Etiologi)? Bagaimana mendeteksinya? Dan bisakah disembuhkan? (2)

Apa itu Psikopat ?

Psikopat adalah suatu gejala kelainan kepribadian yang sejak dulu dianggap berbahaya dan mengganggu masyarakat. Dr. Hervey Cleckley, psikiater yang dianggap salah satu peneliti perintis tentang Psikopat, menulis dalam bukunya “The Mask of Sanity” (1947, dalam Hare, 1993), menggambarkan Psikopat sebagai pribadi yang “likeable, charming, intelligent, alert, impressive, confidence-inspiring, an a great success with the ladies”, tetapi sekaligus juga “irresponsible, self destructive, and the like”. Demikian pula Dr. Robert Hare, dalam bukunya “Without Conscience: The disturbing world of the Psychopaths among us“ (1993) masih bergelut dengan isu yang sama, yaitu kepribadian psikopat yang nampaknya baik hati, tetapi sangat merugikan masyarakat. Namun perlu dicatat, bahwa istilah Psikopat, yang sejak 1952 diganti dengan Sosiopat dan dalam DSM II 1968 resmi dinamakan Sosiopat (Ramsland, tanpa tahun) itu, justru tidak bisa ditemukan dalam DSM IV. Yang ada dalam manual baku yang digunakan oleh para psikitaer di seluruh Amerika Serikat (dan diacu juga oleh para psikolog klinis dan psikiater dan psikolog di Indonesia) itu adalah 10 jenis Kelainan Kepribadian (Personality Disorders) (American Psychiatric Association, 1994: 629). Seorang psikopat dapat melakukan apa saja yang diinginkan dan yakin bahwa yang dilakukannya itu benar. Sifatnya yang pembohong, manipulatif, tanpa rasa kasihan atau rasa bersalah setelah menyakiti orang lain, tanpa ekspresi, sulit berempati dengan orang lain dan mudah mengancam siapa saja, bahkan kadang-kadang ia dapat bertindak kejam tanpa pandang bulu. Pembicaraan mengenai dirinya sangat melambung tinggi dan melihat kelemahan dirinya ada pada orang lain dan tidak peduli terhadap siapapun. (2)

Di Amerika Serikat, Psikopat cukup banyak. Di Indonesia data pastinya memang belum ada. Dra. Tieneke Syaraswati, DNS, Ed, M.Fil, A.And dari FKUI mensinyalir jumlahnya pasti banyak. (4)

Apa penyebabnya (etiologi) ?

Sama seperti definisi dan ruang lingkup, tidak berbicara jelas tentang faktor-faktor penyebab kelainan kepribadian yang bernama psikopat ini. Sampai saat ini, banyak penelitian yang mendukung berbagai aspek penyebab kelainan ini antara lain (3) :

1. Kelainan di otak.

Hubungan antara gejala Psikopat dengan kelainan sistem serotonin, kelainan struktural (“…decreased prefrontal grey matter, decreased posterior hippocampal volume and increased callosal white matter) dan kelainan fungsional (… dysfunction of particular frontal and temporal lobe) otak. (Pridmore, Chambers & McArthur 2005).

2. Lingkungan.

Mereka yang berkepribadian psikopat memiliki latar belakang masa kecil yang tidak memberi peluang untuk perkembangan emosinya secara optimal. (Kirkman, 2002).

3. Kepribadian sendiri.

Adanya korelasi antara perilaku orang-orang dengan sindrom psikopat, dengan skor yang tinggi dalam tes kepribadian Revised NEO Personality Inventory (NEO-P-I-R,1992). (Miller & Lynam, 2003)

Selain beberapa penelitian diatas masih banyak lagi penelitian tentang etiologi psikopat. Sebagian besar psikolog dan psikiater masih berpegang pada faktor lingkungan dalam timbulnya kepribadian psikopat ini.

Bagaimana mendeteksinya ?

Kesulitan metodologis dalam penelitian tentang Psikopat, terutama datang dari terbatasnya kasus yang tersedia. Karena itu beberapa penelitian hanya didasarkan pada satu kasus saja (Hare, 1993; Litman, 2004; Bauchard, 2002). Beberapa penelitian lain terbatas pada sampel tertentu yang bias, seperti Narapidana, hanya bisa dilakukan terhadap topik-topik yang lebih umum dan bisa menggunakan responden umum seperti studi komparatif (N orang dengan indikasi Psikopat berdasarkan DSM IV = 89, N kontrol = 20) (Dolan & Fullam, 2004), atau studi simulasi (N mahasiswa S1 = 174) (Guy & Edens,2003).(3)

Walaupun tidak dapat menentukan penyebabnya, saat ini terdapat alat yang baik untuk mendiferensiasi antara orang-orang dengan gejala psikopat dengan yang tidak, yaitu Psychopath Check List – Revised (PCL-R) yang dikembangkan oleh Prof.Robert Hare yang terdiri atas 20 kuesioner yang memiliki skor 0-2 di setiap pertanyaan. Sedikit kutipan dari 20 pertanyaan dalam PCL-R tentang ciri-ciri psikopat, sebagai berikut (5) :

Persuasif dan memesona di permukaan.
Menghargai diri yang berlebihan.
Butuh stimulasi atau gampang bosan.
Pembohong yang patologis.
Menipu dan manipulatif.
Kurang rasa bersalah dan berdosa.
Emosi dangkal.
Kasar dan kurang empati.
Hidup seperti parasit.
Buruknya pengendalian perilaku.
Longgarnya perilaku seksual
Masalah perilaku dini (sebelum usia 13 tahun).
Tidak punya tujuan jangka panjang yang realistis.
Impulsif.
Tidak bertanggung jawab atas kewajiban.
Tidak bertanggung jawab atas tindakan sendiri.
Pernikahan jangka pendek yang berulang.
Kenakalan remaja.
Melanggar norma.
Keragaman kriminal.
Indonesia saat ini menggunakan Tes Minessota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2) untuk mendeteksi kepribadian psikopat ini yang didalamnya terdapat skala klinis, Skala isi, dan Skala penunjang. Pada awalnya tes MMPI-2 digunakan dalam pelayanan kesehatan jiwa, kemudian meluas ke kalangan militer dan pemerintahan sebagai bagian dari seleksi dan rekruitmen calon pegawai, pejabat (Legislatif & Eksekutif), termasuk calon presiden dan wakilnya. Alat ukur lain yang digunakan berdasarkan teori yang sudah eksis (metode deduksi) adalah Primitive Defense Guide (Helfgott, 2004), Rorschach (Cunliffe & Gacono, 2005), ToM (Theory of Mind) (Dolan & Fullam, 2004; Ritchell, et al. 2003), SCT (Sentence Completion Test) (Endres, 2004), dan NEO PIR (Miller & Lynam, 2003). Bisakah disembuhkan ?

Sebagai kelainan kepribadian yang belum bisa dipastikan penyebabnya, Psikopat belum bisa dipastikan bisa disembuhkan atau tidak. Perawatan terhadap penderita psikopat menurut pengamatan Hare, bukan saja tidak menyembuhkan, melainkan justru menambah parah gejalanya, karena psikopat yang bersangkutan bisa semakin canggih dalam memanipulasi perilakunya yang merugikan orang lain..Beberapa hal, kata Hare akan membaik sendiri dengan bertambahnya usia, misalnya energi yang tidak sebesar waktu muda.

Menurut Tieneke, perilaku psikopatik biasanya muncul dan berkembang pada masa dewasa, mencapai puncak di usia 40 tahun-an, mengalami fase plateau sekitar usia 50 tahun-an lantas perlahan memudar. “ Psikopat juga bisa disebabkan kesalahan pola asuh.” Tambahnya. Saran Tieneke, “Waspadai anak yang pemarah, suka berkelahi dan melawan, melanggar aturan merusak, dan bengis terhadap hewan serta anak yang lebih kecil”.

Di sisi lain, Kirkman (2002) yang percaya bahwa psikopat terbentuk karena salah asuh pada masa kecil, berpendapat bahwa Psikopat bisa dicegah sedini mungkin dengan memberikan asuhan yang tepat sehingga meminimalkan resiko individu kekurangan afeksi pada masa kecilnya.

Indikasi KDRT (Kekerasan Dalam Rumah Tangga) dapat disebabkan karena kepribadian Psikopat ternyata mungkin. Menurut Dr. Husein Anuz Sp.KJ, “Ayah yang Psikopat cenderung memberikan anak yang psikopat juga.”. Ini menunjukkan besarnya peran faktor lingkungan. Biasanya Anak akan meniru apa yang dilakukan Orang Tua nya, jadi tidak heran kasus KDRT rata-rata disebabkan karena apa yang mereka perbuat kepada keluarganya saat ini seperti apa yang orang tua mereka dulu perbuat terhadap keluarganya. Di beberapa negara timbul reaksi di masyarakat akibat ketidaktahuan tentang penyembuhan psikopat. Masyarakat mencoba melindungi diri melalui Undang-Undang. Di Belanda, UU Anti Psikopat diluncurkan dua kali (Abad XX dan di tahun 2002). Demikian pula di AS, hukum anti psikopat dimulai tahu 1930-an yang ditujukan pada Sex Offenders. (Granlund, 2005; Quinn, Forsyth & Mullen-Quinn, 2004).

Yang terpenting adalah penanganan korban psikopat. Penanganan korban psikopat seringkali harus mengalami proses penyembuhan yang panjang dan sulit. Umumnya mereka jatuh dalam trauma yang mendalam. Jadi, tak perlu membuang waktu untuk mengubah Psikopat.

Studies show that writing errors impact negatively on customers� perception of you and your company. Research also proves you see what you expect to see in your own writing, rather than what�s actually there. An editor provides the fresh set of eyes you need.
Larry Beason�s article �Ethos and Error: How Business People React to Errors� shows how judgmental readers can be. Beason, a professor of English at the University of South Alabama, had business people read error-filled documents and then tested their reactions. Beason concluded that errors create confusion regarding meaning, and harm the image of the writer (and the writer�s company).

All the interviewees said that errors affect a person�s credibility and image as a writer or employee, reflecting not just writing ability but other characteristics important for business. Writers who made mistakes were branded hasty, uninformed, careless (�lazy�), and uncaring (�if you can�t be bothered to check your work, your work can�t be that important to you, so why should I care about you and your business?�). Syntax errors? You might be perceived as a faulty thinker. Missed typos? You�re not detail-oriented; you might overlook other, more important details of your job. Some other labels: poor oral communicator; poorly educated person; a sarcastic, pretentious or aggressive writer (primarily writers who misused quotation marks).

Just as errors reflect on the individual, the individual reflects on the company. The interviewees explicitly stated they saw these writers as poor representatives of the company. One businessperson said, �Errors tell what your company�s like.�

The halo effect relates to this. Edward Thorndike found that people rarely think of each other in mixed terms, but rather as universally good or bad. The halo effect is a cognitive bias: the assessment of one quality serves to influence and bias the judgment of other qualities. The �devil effect� is similar�a person sees another as low on several traits because of a belief that the individual is low on one critical trait.

In short, to a businessperson, bad writing equals bad company, or bad employee.

The solution seems simple: check your writing before clients see it. But check and check again, and you still might miss mistakes in your own writing. Meredyth Daneman and Murray Stainton tested whether proofreading one�s own writing is harder than proofing someone else�s. Subjects spent 30 minutes writing an essay, then proofread their own papers and others�. The results showed that subjects were less able to detect errors in self-generated essays than in other-generated essays.

But why is this? In their article, entitled �The Generation Effect in Reading and Proofreading,� Daneman and Stainton say self-generated text is too familiar to the writer�the brain�s to blame.

You�ve probably also seen this (originating from a 1976 dissertation by Graham Rawlinson): �It deosn�t mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are; the iprmoetnt tihng is taht frist and lsat ltteer is at the rghit pclae.� That�s because if the first and last letters and the word length are correct, the brain reads it the way it thinks it should be.

Most writers will run spelling and grammar checks. These do catch many errors, but miss many, too. That�s because, according to Raymond Panko of the University of Hawaii, there are two types of spelling errors. In non-word errors, the misspelling creates a string that isn�t a real word, such as spelling �the� as �teh�. In word errors, the misspelling is a real word�but it�s the wrong word. If you mean �their� and type �there,� that�s a word error. Humans catch only 75% of these errors, Panko says. Spellcheckers catch most non-word errors, but miss most word errors. In other words, they miss exactly the mistakes that people have a hard time finding.

2. Never sign your name on the back of your credit card. Not only will the person stealing your identity have your name, but your signature, and will be able to forge it easily. Instead, write "PHOTO ID REQUIRED" on the back of the card.

3. When ever you write a check for your credit card bill, do not put the full credit card number in the "memo" or "for" line on the bottom left of the check. Only use the last 4 numbers of your Cc number here. 6. A little know fact is that when checking into a hotel or motel, you are generally issued a key card to open the door to your suite. Did you know that this card contains all your vital information, such as address, phone number, credit card number and expiration date? Do not turn the card in when checking out of the hotel, but instead simply destroy the card. It is included in the price of your room. And if turned in, any dishonest employee with access to a card reader can gather your information.

Yesterday while I was writing about a "secret writing tip" that has made my writing easier and faster (�Make a List�), I ended up with a list of 10 steps I go through each time I write an article.

That's how powerful the "Make a List" technique is for writing. You can actually create additional articles while writing the first one.

So, here's my new list of 10 simple steps for writing better articles:

1. Figure out the keywords you need to use in your next article.
2. Write a draft headline or general subject title (you will revise the title later).
3. Make a list.
4. Write one or two sentences about each point on the list.
5. Write an introduction that tells people why this is important to them.
6. Create a dynamic headline. (Use a headline/copywriter's manual if you need help)
7. Write the conclusion. (Don't forget a call to action.)
8. Include links in your resource box or author's information paragraph
9. Submit to EzineArticles.com and other article directories.
10. Repurpose the article for your ezine, blogs, and other uses (use it as a special report subscribers can download when they sign up for your ezine.)

The Eleventh Step

There really should be an eleventh step here: What other lists did you see while writing the first article? Is there another article you could develop based on the first article? There usually is.
